About.com
Real people (not professionals) advise on searching the Internet for books, news, travel, music, etc.

UKAuthors

One of the New Statesman's top rated UK community sites. Provides criticism, advice, information and encouragement to writers (mainly from the UK, but from as far away as Africa, NZ and from wherever it is they do seal-herding).  UKA is free - apart from a nominal five quid registration annually, payable after one month of registered membership.  (People pay real money for 'professional advice' but here, it's given without limit and on the spot.)

Twice a year, an Anthology is printed with contributions chosen through anonymous vote by members.  I highly recommend this site to drop in on for a free good read - from suspense (look at 'What they Don't Tell Us About Trevor MacDonald' by 'heirloom', for example), to brilliant quirky-weird-endearing ('Christmas Comeback' by 'drewgum'), and slapstick humour - heaven or hell ('Escape to Paradise' by 'Chrisk') - as well as for  writers.

*UKAuthors has, strangely and interestingly, a new publishing arm:  The UKA Press.  This is the first publishing company of its kind in the world -started up by an internet writers' group and run, with professional advisors, by that group.  Members are invited to submit well-structured, well-written, completed manuscripts to be considered for publication and a number have been accepted since the Press started up in January.  (Excerpts of accepted manuscripts can be read on the Press pages; interesting to look through them, and I'd like to say that the Tom Saunders struck me as especially well-written.)

Dick Scott

Someone observed, whose work I admire, and who provided information, subjects for painting, and inspired ideas and argument.

Abel & Rawls

Ward Abel, song writer, poet and singer, with his partner, Steve Rawls.  Clips of their music are on the site (including 'Oh, Calais!'). Self-classified: Rock, Pop, College/Indie/Lo-Fi, Progressive Rock. Beautiful voices, fascinating lyrics. Ward writes with a clear and original voice. His poetry is extraordinarily evocative.
